The heart of the zodiac.
Many are the nicknames given to the fifth sign of the zodiac wheel, but the one I prefer the most is definitely ‘the heart’. The Leo constellation is one of the most ancient and easily recognisable in the night sky. Found between Cancer and Virgo, it rules from approximately July 23 to August 22, during the peak of summer, and it is known for its distinctive shape (either a crouching lion or a backwards question mark).
Its brightest star is Regulus (Marauders fans, I’m looking at you), often referred to as the ‘Little King’, and it is located right at the lion’s heart. Fitting perfectly, since Leo governs the core in astrology.
As the name says, this beautiful constellation is symbolised by the Lion, a creature of courage, pride, and strength, and it is all about bold self-expression, warmth, leadership, and love. This is the zodiac that doesn’t just step into the spotlight. They are the spotlight.
This nakshatra was recognised by many ancient civilisations, from the Babylonians to the Egyptians, and, like all the others, it has a mythological origin.
In Greek mythology, Leo is linked to the Nemean Lion, a fierce beast with impenetrable skin that terrorises the land and becomes the first challenge in the hero Heracles’ Twelve Labours. In the legend, Heracles ultimately defeats the lion with his bare hands and wears its skin as armour; however, as tribute to both the creature’s power and his son’s bravery, Zeus places the lion among the stars. Now, this tale is not just about raw strength and brute force. It’s, first and foremost, about courage and heart, two fundamental elements when talking about Leos.
This zodiac is a fixed fire sign, meaning it brings energy, determination, and passion wherever it goes. Like Cancer, it’s the second of the only two signs that are not ruled by a planet but by a luminary. The Sun governs Leo—a star, our star—making it thrive in brightness, joy, and lots of attention. However, contrary to popular stereotypes, it is not just about ego. It’s about essence.
People born under this zodiac embody authentic confidence and, often, a powerful desire to inspire, protect, and uplift those around them. Leos are also deeply loyal, generous, and incredibly affectionate. They are the friends who hype you up, the leaders who care about their people, and the lovers who give their all. When they love, they love out loud but expect the same honesty and devotion in return.
Beyond Greek mythology, the lion has long been a global symbol of nobility, bravery, and divine protection. Across cultures, this animal has stood for the heart of a warrior and the dignity of a ruler, and Leos often carry this energy. They make great performers, leaders, artists, and activists, pouring themselves into everything they do.
They are magnetic and want to be seen, but more importantly, they want to be felt.
I love Leos, perhaps because I have a few placements in this zodiac sign and perhaps because I get along with them so well. They show up fully themselves, unafraid to chase their dreams, and they have a bold heart.
They make great friends and lovers, because, if there’s one thing I can say for sure about Leos, it’s this: give them love, and they’ll give you the world.
